The design of the Midway originated before the Pearl Harbor attack. It was designed to operate a large air group, minimizing flight deck encroachment from the island and gun mounts, the ability to survive 8-inch shell-fire and provided heavy vertical protection to withstand armor piercing bombs. She was commissioned on 10 September 1945 and decommissioned on 11 April 1992. She was donated to the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum on 28 August 2003.
